I got my start in coaching working for the late Don Meyer at Bison Basketball Camps during the mid to late 90s. The first job that he gave players and student assistant coaches, like myself, was working a ‘basket’ at camp. Once assigned to a team, every coach (like every player) was expected to carry a notebook around everywhere. The notebook was to be in your possession at all times from the gym to the cafeteria. I took notes for seven summers listening to coach Meyer and other great teachers of the game.
Most of what coach Meyer talked about and taught did not deal with Xs & Os. Coach talked about life lessons and how to do things the right way. A few years after I left Lipscomb I went back through my camp notebooks and typed everything up onto a word document. Included in the 36 pages of notes were lessons he would often talk about during the camp “Coaches Meetings.” I have labeled this 40 Lessons from Don Meyer. Many of these lessons are a few words or phrases, but they express ideas that translate to ideas that can affect entire lives.
