DUKE: BRANDON INGRAM ISO

Last night Duke pulled off an upset on the road versus North Carolina. In that game freshman wing Brandon Ingram had a big game scoring 20 points. More importantly was the play-making that he did off of the dribble. Here is a breakdown of one of the Blue Devil’s ISO sets that they ran to get Ingram in attack mode.

  • First it is important to note that what makes Coach K so great is his ability to keep it simple. You will rarely if ever see him run complex plays with any team. Yet, he is just creative enough to get the right guys with the ball in the right spots.
  • Next you should notice that Ingram is in the 4-spot. Although Ingram is a wing and we have even seen him be a point guard, his length and athleticism allow him to defend on the interior. This type of versatility at this position is rare and is what makes Ingram a consensus top 3 pick in the NBA draft currently.
  • Also notice the 2 and 3 lined up opposite of Ingram. Those two players in this game were Luke Kennard and Grayson Allen. Both are shooting over 40% on the year. This is what makes this action work. The fact that their defenders cannot help opens the lane up for Ingram to slash and score in the lane.
  • Allen also was put into this play-making spot at times during the game. Another key factor for successful teams is versatility. Players with specialties can expand their game to do multiple things on the floor.
