This past weekend we ran the EBA Top 40 National Camp. I found myself helping Adrian Penland coach a very talented team during game play. This is a play that we ran coming out of half time.
Here was our lineup and explanation of their skill sets:
PG – Avree Carpenter: Heady ball handler, can deliver the ball or create with the dribble
G – Jenna Brown: Naturally a PG, but equally effective on the wing. Very good play creator
W – Jessee Wallis: Very good shooter with versatility. Willing to do dirty jobs
F- Taylor Kissinger: Great shooter with great size at 6-1. Can play the wing or be a stretch 4 in a small lineup
F – Destiny Craig: Good athlete that affects the game inside and out
Thought behind the play design:
- I wanted to get the ball in Carpenter’s hands. I knew that she is a good decision maker and that she would get us into the right spot on offense
- Brown had been driving and creating very well all weekend, but I wanted to see how she would respond when put in the shooting guard position. Is she a player who can still be effective when does not have the ball all the time?
- Kissinger had been shooting the ball exceptionally well and getting her a flare screen is a great look because she can keep her shoulders square to the ball as it is being driven towards her.
- Getting the hand-off with Brown on the wing could get an easy drive to the bucket or open a slip by the screeners.
- Having Wallis as a screener on the weakside is ideal, because if the defense jumps the action she is a capable shot maker on the reversal.
