ASK COACH HEMI: POSSESSION CHART

ASK COACH HEMI: POSSESSION CHART

Coaches often talk about making every possession count to their teams. How do you communicate how important every possession is? Here is a useful tool that we used when breaking down film that charted a number of different areas on both ends of the floor.

Quality of Shots

4= Layup
3= A good shot by a good shooter
2= An ok shot, not a great one
1= A bad shot with little chance to go in
0= A turnover

We talked with our teams about how we can only expect to win if we are getting 4s & 3s each trip down the court. These type of shots would usually lead to a higher shooting percentage.

How? – this charts where the points are coming from

T = Transition
D = Drive
P = Post
R = Rebound
J = Jumper

This is a good way to figure out where you are getting hurt defensively and also where your points are coming from offensively.

We would then add up all of these and break them down to illustrate the importance of every possession. But more importantly, it was good for our staff to gauge if we are truly playing well or simply making tough shots.

The points per possession is one of the most important stats to look at for offensive efficiency! Coaches may feel badly about a lower scoring game and feel their offense is not productive. However, if it is a low possession game there are less chances for scoring.
