Entering his 36th season at the University of Georgia, coach Andy Landers lands at the top of the discussion of women’s basketball coaches in the nation. Last season he scored his 32nd 20-win season and has a .750 winning percentage for his career. However, when we sat down to speak with coach Landers before a practice in October of this year the topic of conversation centered on something other than winning.

Coach Landers on Building a Program:

1. “You can’t change people, but you can affect them.” – on the topic of players and people within the program.
2. When asked how important a recruit’s family is, “Real big. We do not take chances. We do not roll the dice, because the ‘kinda-sorta’ kids will get you.”
3. The time and energy it takes to watch over problems or potential problems prevents you from giving positive attention to your good kids.
4. Building a team where all of the kids get along most of the time is tough. It is very fragile.UGA Staff

With the attention on the character of the people within the program, it is easy to understand why coach Landers has had such lasting success. A big part of the Lady Bulldogs success is the work that coach Landers staff does on the recruiting trail and in practice. Assistant coaches Joni Crenshaw, Robert Mosley and Angie Johnson spent nearly an hour in a pre-practice meeting discussing details of the upcoming practice plan. Their attention to detail is evident in both arenas as they signed the No. 13 ranked recruiting class in 2014. The four freshman in that class include guard Haley Clark, forward MacKenzie Engram, center Nasheema Oliver and guard Jasmine Carter all project to contribute significantly after watching practice this fall. Since our visit in October they secured a commitment from a top 5 JUCO player in Shanae Armbrister and a 4-star power forward in Caliya Robinson from Marietta, Ga., in the class of 2015.
